Jonathan Franzen's main goal is to define the anxiety which pervades the lifes of our fellow citizens in the developed world. Having rejected the American dream of individuals as authors of their own destiny, he blames the unintended consequences of past actions as the main obstacle to happiness. We all strive for purity but we can't guarantee the result of our actions. The world is full of ambiguity and uncertainty.I liked thorough study of the thought process that goes on inside our heads when we consider a course of action. J.Franzen masters perfectly the skill of eavesdropping on characters as they talk to themselves. I liked as well the way he analyzes the complexity of familial relationships. I did not like the contrived plot and the constant urge to show how clever the author is. Too much 'writerly' writing leads to endless and totally unnecessary developments.
